Students may be asked to write a critical essay to develop their critical thinking, as in the process of work they will learn to identify contradictions in the work, find errors, inaccuracies, see the strengths and weaknesses of the work, and also verify the authenticity of certain arguments. If in college you are faced with such a task, then you will need help with college essay.
In this type of essay, the author makes a statement about how certain ideas or themes are conveyed in the text, and then backs up that statement with evidence from primary or secondary sources.
In everyday conversation, we often associate the word "critical†with a negative point of view. However, in the context of a critical essay, the word "critical†simply means critical and analytical. Critical essays analyze and evaluate the meaning and importance of a text instead of judging its content or quality.
Properties of a critical essay
Critical essays are written in many academic disciplines and can include a wide range of text topics: films, novels, poetry, video games, visual arts, and more. Despite the variety of topics, all critical essays have the following characteristics.
Central claim. All critical essays contain a central claim to the text. This argument is usually expressed in a closing statement at the beginning of an essay, and then backed up by evidence in each section of the text. Some critical essays further reinforce their reasoning by including potential counterarguments and then using evidence to challenge them.
Evidence . The central statement of a critical essay must be supported by evidence. In many critical essays, most of the evidence comes in the form of textual support: certain details from the text (dialogue, descriptions, choice of words, structure, images, etc.) that support the argument. Critical essays can also contain evidence from secondary sources, often academic articles, that support or strengthen the main argument.
Conclusion. In critical essays, a short conclusion is made after a statement is made and backed up by evidence. The conclusion summarizes the course of the essay's argumentation and highlights the main findings of the essay.

Tips for writing a critical essay
Writing a critical essay requires careful analysis and careful thinking. If you're struggling with a critical essay assignment, these tips will help you get started.
Practice active reading strategies. These strategies for staying focused and retaining information will help you identify specific details in the text that will support your main argument. Active reading is an important skill, especially if you are writing a critical essay for a literature class.
Read sample essays. If you are not familiar with critical essays as a form, writing an essay is going to be quite a daunting task. Before diving into the writing process, read the various published critical essays, carefully paying attention to their structure and writing style. (As always, remember that paraphrasing an author's ideas without proper attribution is a form of plagiarism.)
Resist the urge to recap. Critical essays should consist of your own analysis and interpretation of the text, not a summary of the text as a whole. If you're writing a long story or character descriptions, pause and consider if these summaries are your main argument or if they're just taking up space.
